To: Al Khamsa, Inc.'s Supporters From: Ellen May, Vice President and chair, Education Committee Subject: Breeding Season and Genetic Testing
Hello, Al Khamsa Breeders,
I want to emphasize the upcoming Genetics articles in the next Khamsat. As a public service announcement, here are some helpful links with information on genetically based diseases. These diseases have been found in some Al Khamsa horses. There are tests for genetic markers for some of these syndromes.
Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA) It is now possible to test for the evidence of markers for this condition. Know before you breed this season if your horses are clear and avoid producing CA affected foals. Visit http://www.cerebellar-abiotrophy.org and http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/genomics/cerebellar for more details.
Severe Combined Immunoficiency Syndrome (SCIDS) A genetic test for this syndrome has been available for some years. You can download information here: http://arabianhorses.org/education/genetic/docs/Severe_Combined_Immunodeficiency.pdf. Discount testing is available through F.O.A.L. at http://www.foal.org/Test-Kits---Forms.html
Lavendar Foal Syndrome (LFS) A genetic test has been developed and is in trials as I write.
It is vitally important that we educate ourselves about these issues, as the very last thing we need to do is to panic and discard valuable genetic material. In preservation breeding, every animal is important. With testing of vulnerable lines, we can make sure that no affected foals are produced, and no valuable bloodlines are lost.
Al Khamsa wants to help you educate yourself about these issues. More information can be found at http://arabianhorses.org/education/genetic/default.asp, and more will be available in the next Khamsat, so don't miss it! Subscription expiration cards are in the mail. Make sure your subscription is current. The subscription price of just $16 is an incredible bargain.
Thanks for listening! Ellen
